John Stoyles

A Landscape Artist in Vermont

Quiet places, carefully observed.

John Stoyles paints places that are easy to overlook but difficult to forget. On first encounter, his work feels familiar: a modest building, a quiet road, a meandering river. Nothing insists on importance, yet the longer you look, the more the scene reveals itself.

Grounded in careful observation, Stoyles’ paintings reflect a deep attentiveness to place. Originally from England, his home and studio are now in Vermont, where New England’s landscape and built environment have become a central focus of his work. It is a region dense with history that rarely announces itself, and one that carries a quiet sense of familiarity.

That understated history is integral to the paintings. Historic and contemporary structures coexist. Working buildings endure, and the green mountains and hills backdrop every landscape. Time accumulates subtly, embedded in surfaces, materials, and light.

Season and light play a defining role. A location changes dramatically through the year: winter compresses color, summer expands it; shadows shift, surfaces transform. These paintings hold such moments in suspension, allowing time to slow and be experienced without urgency.

Painted without judgment or embellishment, the work invites unhurried attention and rewards lingering. Each painting holds a moment of stillness, suspended in time, waiting to be discovered and experienced whenever one chooses to return to it.

An original painting by John Stoyles - A landscape artist in Vermont. "New England’s rolling green mountains, winding rivers, and white-steepled villages are not only my daily backdrop but also my constant source of inspiration. My passion for painting also extends beyond Vermont’s borders. With America’s abundance of stunning landscapes, I never limit myself to home. You’ll find many contrasting settings in my work."
